Irena Sendler
Irena Sendler was born in Warsaw on 15th of February 1910. She was a Polish social activist. She saved about 2,500 Jewish children from Holocaust.
She studied law on Warsaw University. In 1931 she married with Mieczysław Sendler.
In August 1943, The Council to Aid Jews “Żegota”, nominated her to head its children’s section. She wore a Star of David as a sign of solidaritywith the Jewish people. Irena Sendler was arrested for her activities by Gestapo. She was severely tortured and sentenced to death, but “Żegota” bribed German guards and saved Irena.After war she worked for children; she built orphanages.
She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2007 she received the Order of the Smile. She died in Warsaw on 12th of May 2008.
